Local historian Phil Waller has published his first ever book delving into the history of a place he knows so well. ‘Around Orpington Through Time’ is a full-colour, illustrated insight into the South East London suburb, bringing its history and memories to life with the help of over fifty images and maps.
Around Orpington Through Time is a brand new book by local author Phil Waller, exploring the fascinating history of Orpington and its districts.
Orpington has a rich history of development and involvement on the world stage, and as the first mainstream local history publication in 30 years, this is a 'must-have' step back in time for any resident or visitor familiar with the area.
Focusing on the transformation from village to town over the past 100 years, the publication covers Orpington, Chelsfield, Crofton, Downe, Farnborough, Green Street Green, Locksbottom, Petts Wood, Pratt's Bottom, St Mary Cray and St Paul's Cray.
It is the latest title in Amberley Publishing’s extensive and successful Local History series and through a carefully selected collection of photographs, and with the aid of Waller’s factual captions, you'll be able to take a fascinating 96 page tour around Orpington, exploring the history and charting the change.
Around Orpington Through Time is an intuitive, full colour guide featuring “then and now” images of different places in and around Orpington, sourced with help from the council archives, Bromley Museum and the Orpington History Organisation (OHO).
Born and raised in Orpington, Phil Waller and his hobby of local history studies led to the creation of the OHO which now has over 3000 active enthusiasts across the world. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to OHO.
When Amberley asked Phil to produce this new Orpington history guide, he could immediately see the potential:
“A lot of people moved out of Orpington in the 1950s and 1960s because there were big orphanages here sending people across to places like Canada, South Africa and Australia, and those people are now interested in their family history.
"There are small local pamphlets available from the library but nothing like this.”
Around Orpington Through Time by Phil Waller was published on Monday 28th October and is now available from:
