Update on the ODEON Cinema Complex

The exciting plans for a seven screen Odeon cinema are moving ahead

A seven screen Odeon cinema is the centrepiece of the plans at Walnuts Shopping Centre, which will also include four new retail units, three new restaurants and the remodelling of the public square.

The exciting plans to completely transform the Walnuts shopping centre are moving ahead following the demolition of the former Job Centre at Crown House. The hoardings have now been temporarily moved back to open up the walkways, allowing shoppers to pass more easily around the centre

“ While we wait for construction to begin, there are plans to improve the look of the hoarding with a selection of 8ft x 4ft branded vinyl panels” explained manager Martin Price. “Some of the panels will also display the CGI drawings of what the scheme will look like once complete.”

When finished the centre will feature a stunning seven screen multiplex Odeon Cinema with a total seating capacity of 950 people. There will also be four large shops and three restaurants, while the outside public square will be improved and landscaped.

Bella Italia signed a 20 year lease earlier this week for 1 and a bit units under the cinema.

With the other building Premier Inn aren't taking the whole building mainly the 2 upper floors that was Orpington College and an extra floor will be added. On the ground floor between what was Silver Lounge and Subway will remain shops and the rest of the building on the ground floor will be a restaurant owned by premier inn so that they would more likely get planning permission. However I heard rumors that Siansbury's weren't happy because the hotel could restrict their loading times which I can understand because I worked near there and their loading and off loading is very loud.

I feel that however the Odeon is being over hyped currently, it is a cinema but it's being treated like the saviour of Orpington before it's opened. The pictures that children have drawn that are displayed on the boards covering the site almost all of them show the Odeon but there doesn't seem to be a plan B. The Odeon will probably get many customers but what if it doesn't bring lots of people in and there are many movie flops? There is a lot of anticipation which can lead to under delivery of expectations. On the opening night they will need to have some kind of big celebrity opening or mock film premier and there will need to be good movies on show at the time to keep up the hype because people have been hyping the cinema for about 2 years and it won't be opening for about another 8 months

Rumours about upstairs of the Silver Lounge becoming a Premier Inn are circulating.
More rumours about the College taking over the police station.
Still the great ugly wooden wall is gracing the Walnuts open area with absolutely nothing going on behind it yet.
How soon is 'soon'?

Dear all - I hope to be able to give you some news regarding the Cinema Development soon.
I can tell you that there are no plans to demolish the parade of shops from Silver Lounge to the High Street...! However, there are plans for the empty Police Station which will be announced soon.

Martin

Totally agree with the above our town is just being neglected. When is the cinema complex going to start!! I have heard rumurs that the parade of shops from the Silver Lounge down to the High Street is to be demolished. When are we going to start putting Orpington on the map at the moment there is nothing to bring any one to the town

I agree with J Hinton above.
Why are there never any updates on such a serious state of affairs for the Community of Orpington?
Thanks

Dear all - although the cinema development has unfortunately been delayed, I can assure you that it is still going to happen and that the developers/investors are fully committed to seeing it through. I've been informed that the pre-lettings they need to start construction will sign up hopefully before Christmas with a planned start soon after.

I'm unable to tell you any more than that at the moment but as soon as I hear anything I will let you know.

Martin

Just tried to support/ agree with Paul R and Sheila, but when tried to 'vote' it went to -1!
God knows what that is!
As for the poss 'Canned' project, really feel gutted. Have teenage daughters, plus their friends and even the rest of the family, would not only welcome some vibrance back in Orpington, but would give some incentive to visit the High at all, plus it would be bringing more business to the other shops. I live 10 mins from High st but hardly ever shop there, Dead, bland, empty and boring (in a nut shell! )

Speaking to a senior officer of Bromley Council yesterday, I was told that negotiations by the developers to sign up the required number of key stores were very, very close but not yet there.

This is a real shame. Why is it that Orpington is alway sidelined. Where did all the money go that was obtained from Tesco's when they purchased the car park. I would like to see how much was spent in Orpington?

We are left with a total mess in the Walnuts now

The following information from Odeon Cinema's suggests Orpington project is dead. On the companies list of cinemas thought the UK, Orpington is not listed, all new projects ARE listed with opening dates of 2014 and 2015. With no noise coming from anyone within the project team for Orpington I think this says it all. Looks like I will continue to spend my money at Bluewater which is a shame as I support this project which would put Orpington back on the map.

I can't help feeling the same Paul unless they get a gang of super-builders to build it in the 6 weeks left to the end of the year................some hope !!
At the same time Bromley's new cinema complex is growing by the day, what a surprise. Another example of sidelining Orpington onto the back burner. The only thing we in Orpington have that's better than Bromley is our train service. Unfortunately there is little to attract anyone from outside to visit Orpington. Bromley even have hijacked our museum name.
Can anyone tell us what is happening to the cinema in Orpington and when it is going to happen???

So the cinema should be nearly ready to open for business, end of 2013...... Stars and celebrities from the bromley / Orpington area to attend the grand opening, excitement from the local public..... Reality, we have a eye sore in the middle of the Walnuts, no news from Miller, no news from local council, no news from the local press......tumble weeds passing through Orpington. A project which appears to be dead, all advertising in the Walnuts now taken down.......... I really hope this project is just delaid but from what I can see, it doesn't appear to be good news!! Odeon have proberly pulled out due to lack of interest in tennants occuping the new shops.

NO,

The add comment function kept telling me that I had not entered the security code correctly, so I entered the newly displayed one, with the same result. I finally gave up. And then discovered lots of emails in my inbox.

There appears to have been a problem with the software at TownTalk's end.

There was a surveyor measuring the square outside the College yesterday where what remains of the market is held.

Perhaps some movement is underway there?

Now we are mid November and there is still no sign of any work begining in Orpington......meanwhile in Bromley their cinema etc is storming ahead.
Why doesn't anyone tell us what is happening to this ugly void where building should be taking place.
Has anyone checked out the amusing rant on this subject on 'youtube' here is the link.

Martin, I hope you are right. There is a lot of competition from Bromley now. Would have been a lot easier if Nugent was located at the Walnuts. Surely Marks and Spencer's has to return in some capacity!

The Odeon cinema is still coming to Orpington.
All I can say is that the developers are working very hard to secure one or two more pre-lettings before construction can start.

I agree with Stacey, the only way you are going to maximise customer potential is by adding in some good shops in the area! Pr**ark/H&M/Topshop or even boutiques!
Really looking forward to seeing the end result!

Q. Is the complex still on schedule?

A. We are only slightly behind schedule – but please do keep looking out because it won’t be long before construction starts.

Suggestion - It would be good if a panel was created to allow viewing of the building works in progress as was created when the college had a lot of work going on.

Response - There’s nothing much to see at the moment but there are plans to introduce viewing panels into the hoarding when construction starts.
