Please be aware of a new scam used recently at businesses in the Bromley Borough and Kent.

Specifics may vary but in one recent local case, 2 males entered shop in a hurried manner. One male took 2 items from the shelf, asked to pay by card and when offered the machine to tap his card he stated that the card was not contactless.

The suspect took the pin pad and began pushing buttons frantically whilst the accomplice employed distraction tactics. When questioned on behaviour the suspect claimed he was trying to enter his pin and was on the 3rd attempt.

When the pin pad was taken off him a figure 10 times the amount of the purchase had gone through on the card. Upon the sales person calling the card company to check he was advised that a refund should be issued, as the payment had gone through.

A refund was processed on a card which subsequently turned out to be a different card, with the first one registered abroad.

Suspects were familiar with the workings of the pin pad and the process for making refunds.

Please be vigilant and report any suspicious incidents.
