Locating to Orpington High Street in 2018, translation agency, Language Link, is run by Orpington residents and husband and wife team Robert and Kirsty Manik. We caught up with them to learn more about their business.

O1st: How did the it all start?

RM: Language Link UK Ltd was set up in 1993 in the middle of the recession and the idea was based on creating a company with strong values around quality and strong customer service. We felt professional translation/interpreting services would be required due to globalisation in the early 90ís after the cold war ended in 1991. As communist bloc countries previously isolated from the capitalist West began to integrate into the global market economy. The idea was to be the best translation provider specialising in Legal & Financial translations/interpreting. In the early years we obtained many law firms and financial companies where we built strong relationships. Creating these relationships is the key to building our business & reputation. We believe communication is the main driver to creating success.

O1st: Can you tell us about yourselves and your background?

(RM) I have been in the translation industry for nearly 30 years having been in banking beforehand. I joined the largest translation company in the world in the late 80ís, started at the bottom and worked my way up to Senior Account Manager within 4 years. I was fascinated with language & culture and how the business world integrated with it. I play cricket for Orpington Cricket Club and have played there for 14 years. I also play football for a local side and try to go to the gym when I can. Kirsty joined the business 5 years ago, implementing many changes which have made the company run a lot smoother. Kirstyís administrative background and experience in managing teams have been of great help in taking over the day to day running of the businesses. Kirsty took a few years out to raise our 4 children. Between us juggling work and them, there is never a dull moment!

O1st: Whatís a typical day in the office?

RM: We run different parts of the business. Iím in charge of building client relationships and bringing in new business as well as the overall running of the company. Kirstyís role is the day to day running of the office and everything that comes with that. She makes sure everything runs smoothly. We both work on how to diversify the business.

O1st: What makes Language Link UK Ltd different?

RM: The company has had to keep up with the times. This brings changes like any business however keeping the base beliefs and values are the most important things. At Language Link UK Ltd we believe our unique understanding of the quality of the product coupled with value for money and strong customer service is paramount to retaining clients over the last 25 years.

O1st: What made you opt for Orpington Ė what are the benefits of being on the high street?

RM: The main reason we decided to come to Orpington was that we felt that in the last 5 years the High Street has become a hive of activity with a lot different business. We also wanted to become part of a business community. The excellent transport links mean itís a great place to have a base and there is a strong talent pool in terms of employment. The added bonus was not only do we live in Orpington but so do all our staff. Having cut everyoneís travel time dramatically has made happy team!

O1st: What does the future hold for Language Link UK Ltd?

RM: We want to keep building the business using local people. It is our aim to be part of the business community and help Orpington in the next stage of its growth.
