Volunteers from Orpington St John Ambulance appear in coverage from Trooping the Colour shown on BBC One
If you were watching coverage of Trooping the Colour on BBC One on Saturday 8 June 2019, you may have seen a short piece on some of the medical teams including St John Ambulance, that are involved in caring for those taking part in and watching Trooping the Colour and its rehearsals.
The piece was filmed during the two rehearsals for Trooping the Colour, the Major General’s Review on Saturday 25 May and the Colonel’s Review on Saturday 1 June, during which two volunteers, Paul Matthews and John Matthews, from Orpington Unit St John Ambulance were providing first aid at the events for members of the public.
The cameras filmed a number of different activities that go during a normal event for St John Ambulance volunteers including attending a briefing at the beginning of the event, responding to calls, and treating patients.
John Matthews, Unit Manager of the Orpington Unit, said that
“It was great opportunity to showcase the work that volunteers from St John Ambulance put in week in and week out at events up and down the country providing first aid to those who need it, and while only a short part of footage that was taken was shown during the broadcast I hope it gives people an idea of what our volunteers get up to”.
You can still see the piece on BBC iPlayer (https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0005xdz/trooping-the-colour-2019) with the section on the medical care starting at about 2:08. John can be seen treating from about 2:10.
If you’ve been inspired by seeing what St John Ambulance get up to or would like to be part of our team please contact John Matthews by email (John.Matthews1@sja.org.uk) to find out how to get involved and to attend our Unit meetings.
