Volunteers from St John Ambulance in Orpington have been busy preparing for the London Marathon taking place on Sunday the 28 April 2019. Over the past few weeks volunteers have been restocking equipment as well as planning refresh sessions for marathon specific injuries and conditions.
However, the preparation for what is described as the largest annual fundraising event in the world does not stop there, in the next week volunteers will be attending several CPD sessions including one during the Orpington Unit’s bi-weekly meeting, collecting and moving equipment, and attending briefings.
On the day itself several volunteers will be at the event providing first aid and ambulance support including from the finish line.
The Unit Manager, John Matthews (pictured), has been preparing for this London Marathon since October, not as a volunteer but in preparation for taking part as a runner. He has volunteered at 10 previous occasions, and after being inspired decided to enter the ballot. He found out in October that he was successful and has been in training ever since slowly building up the miles. He is running for the youth homeless charity, Centrepoint. More about his story and training can be found at HERE
John said “The London Marathon is a fantastic and inspiring event, I am pleased that my colleagues from St John Ambulance from all over the country including from Orpington will be there to look after all the runners but I am hoping the only contact I have with them is hearing their cheers as I make my way round the course”.
“We are keen to hear from local people who wish volunteer at such great events such as the London Marathon; no previous experience is needed as full training, including first aid, is provided”
