The high-spec ODEON Orpington was once again the venue for the annual Orpington’s Finest Awards, affectionately dubbed “The Orpies” by regular host, Greg Davies.

Organised by Orpington 1st Business Improvement District and sponsored by Perrys, The Walnuts Shopping Centre, Shopper Anonymous and Aces, this year’s gala ceremony was attended by nearly 200.

Guests enjoyed a prosecco and pizza reception before being welcomed with a video message from Deputy Mayor of London for Business, Rajesh Agrawal, from City Hall.
Films of the shortlistees for each award were played on the big screen with 29 businesses represented across nine independently judged categories and two further awards, ‘Favourite Business’ and ‘Best Employee’, voted for by the public.

Special guests included LBB portfolio holder for Renewal, Cllr. Peter Morgan, who presented the award for ‘Best New Business’ to Cow & Pig and Cllr. William Huntingdon Thresher, portfolio holder for the environment, who presented The Green Award to McDonald's Orpington.

A congratulatory and celebratory mood prevailed, with a great generosity of spirit demonstrated, even between direct competitors.

Julie Dawson, manager of Roman, who won the 'Fashion' category, said, "Obviously we're delighted to have picked up the award but I'd like to accept it on behalf of all our neighbours. We do work together wherever possible, and of course we all benefit from more people being attracted to Orpington town centre. The stronger we are as a whole the more opportunity there is for all of us."

With Orpington businesses leading the way for dementia awareness, this year’s competition saw the introduction of an award for the most dementia friendly business, The Clayton Turner Award, named after co-chair of the Bromley Dementia Action Alliance, Angela Clayton Turner and her late husband, Ted. Angela Clayton Turner herself was in attendance to present the accolade to Clarkson Wright & Jakes.

Clarkson Wright & Jakes tweeted "CWJ are honoured to have won The Clayton Turner Award at the Orpington Finest Awards #TheOrpies for the most dementia friendly business. Well done to @orpington1st for a great evening and bringing our business community together."

The awards also marked the start of a new chapter for the town, after businesses voted overwhelmingly in favour of renewing Orpington’s Business Improvement District, which will now invest at least a further £750k in the town centre throughout a second term running until March 2023.

“Tonight has been a great celebration of the strength of business in Orpington,” said Chris Travers, Orpington 1st BID Manager, “We’ve had an incredible response to this year’s Orpington’s Finest, and the fantastic comments we received from the public really demonstrate our businesses’ understanding of the need to provide an exceptional customer experience.”

Orpington 1st Executive Director, Sharon Baldwin, said, “I am delighted that this competition, which is a showcase for excellence, continues to grow and develop alongside the town centre itself. Having City Hall involved this year highlights the fact that we are succeeding in getting the recognition and support that we expect and require to take us forward.

I would like to thank and congratulate all of the winners who are a fantastic example and great ambassadors for the business community and Orpington”
