Businesses in Orpington town centre have voted overwhelmingly in favour of renewing the town’s Business Improvement District (BID) for a second term.
Orpington 1st, the London Borough of Bromley’s first BID, will now run until 2023.
Established in 2013, Orpington 1st has invested over £1million on projects to improve Orpington as a place to live, work and visit including an exciting calendar of town centre events, a website and magazine promoting the town, the creation of a town centre police team and various measures to improve the physical appearance of the town.
A ballot amongst the town’s businesses saw 82.3% vote in favour, with the combined rateable value of positive votes at 83.6%, a 40% increase in yes votes on the initial BID ballot which ushered in the implementation of the BID.
BID Chairman, Martin Price said, “It’s wonderful to see the town’s business community come together in continued support of Orpington 1st Business Improvement District. The BID provides all businesses with the opportunity of direct involvement in the development of their town centre, and of influencing its performance.
Sharon Baldwin, Orpington 1st Executive Director, said, “We are delighted to have received such a significant increase in yes votes for the renewal and therefore an even stronger mandate for the delivery of our business plan. The result really does demonstrate the value of the BID to both individual businesses and to the town as a whole.”
The BID is funded primarily by a levy on those business premises within the BID boundary, although Orpington 1st also achieved around £400,000 of additional income during the first term.
Orpington 1st BID Manager, Chris Travers added, “We’re extremely pleased that our business community have shown such strong support for the BID and we look forward to working towards an increasingly dynamic, better connected and more prosperous Orpington for a further five years.”
Following news of the result, Cllr. Peter Morgan, Executive Councillor for Renewal and Recreation said, “Much has already been achieved by Orpington 1st and our congratulations go to Orpington’s business community and the BID team for this excellent result. We look forward to continuing to work with Orpington 1st over the coming years."
