Orpington's businesses gathered at the ODEON cinema last Thursday to recognise and celebrate the best of their business community.
This year's competition, organised by Orpington 1st, run in partnership with News Shopper and sponsored by Perrys, Walnuts Shopping Centre and Shopper Anonymous, saw a record number of entrants and a huge increase in nominations from the public.
Over 30 individual businesses were shortlisted, representing a wide range of the retail and services available within the town centre.
Chris Travers, Orpington 1st BID Manager said: "Our annual business awards are a wonderful opportunity to showcase the strength in depth of Orpington's business community and a great chance to celebrate excellent service, in what has been an exciting 12 months for the town."
The anticipation was palpable, with a real sense of excitement among the finalists.
Maneesh Patel from Photo Village, winner of the 'Best Newcomer Award' said, "We were genuinely shocked to win the Best Newcomer award against such strong competition. We're made up! It was also really nice to meet so many other great local businesses and we're already talking about some new joint initiatives!"
Orpington currently enjoys its lowest vacancy rate since Local Data Company records began and has seen a huge increase in interest from businesses wishing to locate to the town.
Orpington 1st Executive Director, Sharon Baldwin, said: "Tonight's event is evidence of how well connected and positive the business community of Orpington is, and how this joined up approach is helping to support the continued development of the town into a vibrant and viable town centre."
"Our strong business base means we are well placed to encourage continued investment, that will serve both current and future customers' needs and is reflective of the emerging role Orpington has as the London-Kent Gateway."
Recent additions to the the town centre such as national brands ODEON, Premier Inn and Nando's were all shortlisted, alongside established independents such as Primo Caffe, Thomas Dunton Solicitors and STAKS DIY.
Martin Price, chairman of Orpington 1st said, "On behalf of the board of directors I would like to say a huge thank you to this year's sponsors, but most of all to all Orpington's businesses who I am proud to represent as chairman of the Orpington 1st."
