THE Princess Royal spent an hour chatting to volunteers at Save the Children in Orpington High Street last week.
Princess Anne, president of the children’s charity, visited shop leader Liz Wells and her team of volunteers on Thursday. She spoke to each of the volunteers, including Jean Page (46 years’ service), Wendy Bailey (30+) and Brenda Dean (13), who have all recently celebrated their 90th birthdays.
Shop leader Liz said: “The Princess last visited approximately seven years ago. The first time was in 1989.
“The Princess Royal stayed for about an hour. The main purpose was to see our volunteers in the new shop and to present flowers to our ladies, some of whom have been here over 40 years.”
Of the royal visit, Orpington resident Liz added: “It was an absolute delight, the volunteers were over the moon. There was no hurriedness, Anne even remembered quite a few of the volunteers from her previous visits.
“She knows an awful lot about Save the Children and takes takes a keen interest. She certainly likes the shop.”
Save the Children’s Orpington shop is currently appealing for volunteers. If you can help, call 01689 890435 or drop into the shop at 314 Orpington High Street.
