In this 60-minute Lecture-Demonstration, performer/teacher Sam Liu from Canada, will speak about how newcomers learning an instrument can relate to Classical Music. This Lecture-Demonstration is for piano students of all ages, young children from the ages of 4 welcome, so hope you will not miss this wonderful event. Sam is a very young musician, but he has already won several international competitions, and have recently come back from a very successful tour of Japan. He is also an avid conductor, a skill he demonstrated whilst teaching full time at Sevenoaks School. A graduate of Trinity Laban Conservatoire, he now plays actively in a violin+piano duo with his Japanese partner, and is in the midst of his Masters Degree at King's College London.

SAM LIU
Born in 1988, Sam Liu lived with his family in Vancouver, Canada and began his piano study with Grace Schmuecker and subsequently with Dietmar Schmuecker before moving to London to study with Douglas Finch, Philip Fowke, and Patsy Toh.

Sam has won various awards such as the first prize of "Il Circolo" Competition at the Italian Cultural Centre, Piano Transcription Competition, and has given recitals throughout UK and Canada including twice for Yamaha Artist Service Europe at Chappell, London, and "Ronald Stevenson at 80" event at St. John's Smith Square, which he played a solo recital and a performance of Ronald Stevenson's Piano Concerto No.1 in the presence of the composer.

Sam has performed in many masterclasses given by world-renown artists such as Dina Parakhina, Nelita True, Angela Hewitt, Leslie Howard, Joseph Banowetz, Anton Kuerti, and Murray McLachlan. He frequently performs with his duo partner Mansoon Bow for various projects, with recent highlights include the complete Schumann Violin Sonata at Pheonix Hall, Osaka.

Sam is also enthusiastic about conducting. He has given several performances with an orchestra of his own back in Canada. Most recently, he conducted a production of "La Finta Giardiniera" by Mozart with the opera company 'Opera at Home', which gave many performances at venues such as the Reform Club London and Greenwich Playhouse.

After two years of residential post at the Sevenoaks School, Sam is now a student at King's College London completing his Master degree on Music.
